Abstract
Objective: To present a case of choriocarcinoma as a cause of antepartum haemorrhage and of severe and fatal postpartum haemorrhage in a patient carrying her pregnancy to term.
Method: Detailed clinical, postmortem gross and histopathological analysis of a patient who presented with severe persistent postpartum haemorrhage after a caesarian hysterectomy was carried out and histopathological findings correlated with clinical findings.
Results: showed disseminated gestational choriocarcinoma at term, resulting in a massive intracerebral haemorrhage culminating in the death of the patient.
Conclusion: choriocarcinoma is an uncommon cause of antepartum haemorrhage, severe primary and secondary postpartum haemorrhage and intracerebral haemorrhage, when clinically suspected the diagnosis should be pursued aggressively and patients vigorously treated.
