Factors Predicting Marital Adjustment in Omani Society

Abstract

Background/Purpose: The aim of this research was to examine marital adjustment in Omani society. It also aims to investigate the factors that might predict marital adjustment.
Method: To measure marital adjustment, a specific questionnaire was designed for the purpose of this study. The sample included 255couples who came from different regions in Oman.This sample consisted of 171 husbands and 83 wives. The survey validity was assessed using face validity. Reliability of the questionnaire was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and test-rets methods. The value of Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was .93., and the value for test-retest was .56. Social desirability of the respondents was also examined using social desirability scale.
Results: This study revealed that level of marital adjustment among couples was high. Gender, age, number of children, and divorce were the main predictors of marital adjustment among the study sample.
Conclusion: This study has significant implications for marital counselors.
